Located on 41st Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues) in New York City, the Nederlander Theatre is the southernmost of the recognized 'Broadway' Theaters. Opened in 1921, the venue has gone through several names: National Theatre (1921); Billy Rose Theatre (1959); Trafalgar Theatre (1979) before being changed to its current name in 1980.
The only previous time I've attended a show at the Nederlander was back in the summer of 1996 to see the original cast of Jonathan Larson's landmark and Tony-award winning musical 'Rent'. I remember the theater appearing like it had been neglected. Reports say the facade and interior was decorated to resemble a downtown nightclub. The show closed in 2008 after 5,123 performances. Visitors today will encounter a refurbished and bright new interior
After the closing of 'Rent' the theater has hosted a revival of 'Guys and Dolls' (2009), the first revival of Neil Simon's 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' (2009) which lasted only nine performances; 'Million Dollar Quartet' (2010) and currently 'Newsies The Musical' (2012).
The Nederlander has 1,232 seats on two levels and is one of the Nederlander's nine Broadway theaters. Click HERE for seating chart. Online ticketing is handled through Ticketmaster.com.
