At one time New York Shopping was unlike any other with unique luxury shops being the points of attraction. As many of these retailers have expanded, their shops can be find major metropolitan areas across the USA. But being this is New York some of these flagship branches have larger selections of merchandise and many overseas travelers find the street a bargain against the weak American dollar.

Though Fifth Avenue begins in downtown on the north side of Washington Square, the heart of the shopping district is between 49th Street by Rockefeller Center extending north to 59th Street at the southeast corner of Central Park. First time visitors can make Fifth Avenue an all day affair starting further south at the Empire State Building and including stops at the Rockefeller Center complex which includes the Top of the Rock observations deck and NBC Studio & Store, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trump Tower and what is now one of the most photographed buildings in the city, the giant glass-cubed Apple Store. Eating options dot the side streets.

Some popular retailers on the Fifth Avenue: Tiffany & Co. (57th Street), Saks Fifth Avenue (between 50th and 51st), Bergdorf Goodman (57th) and Lord & Taylor (between 38th and 39th).

Being this was rather rainy morning, I chose not to stray too far. The following posts include my stops along the avenue before a Sunday theatre matinee. I would normally make a stop at Apple Store to browse through the massive selection of accessories but with the iconic glass cube obscured by construction I would save a return to the retailer until next time.
